013 annuleert optreden Bob Vylan na nieuwe controversiële uitspraken

Het geplande optreden van de Britse rap-punkgroep Bob Vylan op dinsdag 16 september in Poppodium 013 in Tilburg gaat niet door. Aanleiding voor de annulering zijn de controversiële uitspraken die de artiest gisteravond tijdens een show in Paradiso in Amsterdam deed.
Ondanks de controverse die na hun optreden op Glastonbury ontstond, besloot 013 Bob Vylan destijds toch te laten optreden in Tilburg. Daarbij gaf het podium aan begrip te hebben voor de woede van de artiest over het genocidale geweld van de staat Israël in Gaza, een situatie die alle aandacht verdient, ook al waren diens woorden niet de onze. Die ontzetting en verontwaardiging delen wij nog altijd. Bovendien verduidelijkte Bob Vylan in een eigen verklaring dat zijn eerdere uitspraak ‘death to the IDF’ geen antisemitische leus was, maar kritiek betrof op het Israëlische leger.
013 wilde een signaal afgeven dat Gaza alle aandacht verdient en dat verontwaardiging daarover ook op een podium een plek mag hebben. Daarvoor staan wij nog steeds. De uitspraken die Bob Vylan gisteravond in Paradiso deed, gaan voor ons echter een duidelijke grens over. Het bagatelliseren van politieke moord en het oproepen om mensen ‘op straat te gaan zoeken’ verwerpen wij ten stelligste.
Hoewel we begrijpen dat de uitspraken zijn gedaan in de context van punk en activisme, en dat de berichtgeving hierover soms minder genuanceerd is dan wat er werkelijk heeft plaatsgevonden, vinden wij toch dat deze nieuwe uitingen te ver gaan. Ze vallen voor ons niet langer binnen de grenzen van wat wij een podium kunnen bieden.

The scheduled performance of the British rap-punk group Bob Vylan on Tuesday, September 16th, at Poppodium 013 in Tilburg will not take place. The cancellation was prompted by the controversial statements the artist made last night during a show at Paradiso in Amsterdam.
Despite the controversy that arose after their performance at Glastonbury, 013 previously decided to let Bob Vylan perform in Tilburg. The venue indicated at the time that they understood the artist’s anger over the genocidal violence of the Israeli state in Gaza, a situation that deserves full attention, even if their words were not our own. We still share that sentiment of shock and indignation. Moreover, Bob Vylan clarified in their own statement that their earlier remark, “death to the IDF,” was not an antisemitic slogan but a critique of the Israeli army.
013 wanted to convey the message that Gaza deserves full attention and that indignation about the genocide is allowed to be shown on stage. We still stand by that. However, the statements made by Bob Vylan last night at Paradiso crossed a clear boundary for us. We reject the trivialization of political murder and open calls to go out and “find them in the streets.”
While we understand that the statements were made in the context of punk and activism, and that media coverage regarding these sentiments is sometimes less nuanced than what actually happened, we still believe that these new comments went too far. For us, these new comments no longer fall within the boundaries of what we can offer a stage to.
